Uxbridge Hayes
In Uxbridge Hayes, London, UK, a venture is in progress to transform the ground-level rear extension of a shop into a standalone studio flat, with its entrance. To obtain council approval, a meticulous analysis of daylight and sunlight accessibility is essential. The primary goals are to preserve the integrity of the existing rear wall, encompassing all window features, and to adhere to the minimum standards outlined by the Building Research Establishment (BRE) concerning Vertical Sky Component (VSC), Daylight Factor (DF), and direct sunlight exposure. This endeavor involves safeguarding both the aesthetic and structural elements of the original structure, while ensuring adequate natural light levels within the proposed studio flat.

Daylight Sunlight Assessment
The plan involves converting the current shop extension into a studio flat, with the entrance facing north, which inherently limits its exposure to daylight, especially on the assessed date of March 21st. The task was to evaluate the daylight accessibility for the proposed studio flat and devise strategies to increase the minimum direct sunlight to over 1.5 hours, meeting the BRE requirements. Through daylight sunlight assessment using the IESVE simulation package, we suggested installing a skylight since the client preferred not to alter the front entrance wall. Consequently, the daylight factor saw a significant improvement, rising from a mere 1.5% to 6.1%.

3d massing & daylight report
A comprehensive 3D model was crafted to accurately depict the present situation. This encompassed modeling both the existing structure and the proposed developments to conduct a thorough analysis of daylight and sunlight accessibility, facilitating a detailed comparison of their respective outcomes. Subsequently, a comprehensive report was meticulously compiled for submission to the UK council, outlining the findings and recommendations derived from the study. This submission proved successful, marking a crucial step forward in the approval process for the proposed transformation.
